Climb Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike Wheelchair Challenge- Do it for Charity!

Some important attachments including an application form can be downloaded from the bottom of this page

This year we have decided to re-run our Scafell Pike Challenge, the event will take place on the bank holiday weekend on the
25th, 26th and 27th of May. We will ascend via Wasdale Walk to the summit which stands at an impressive 989 metres. Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England.

We aim for our team to consist of 50 disabled people, with supporting volunteers. Why? We run this event to illustrate that:

A)     Only 8% of disabled people are wheelchair users - many disabilities are unseen,

B)     Disabled people are neither useless nor unemployable

C)     People with disabilities can do impressive things, given a bit of appropriate help.

People with unseen disabilities are most welcome (asthma, bulimia, cancer, dyslexia, diabetes, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia etc). Disabled volunteers will have a team of nondisabled volunteers to help them do the job. This means that you can join us. Every person who completes the ascent will get a certificate (for your CV) to say that you attained the summit of the highest mountain in England, and that you did it for charity.

We are especially looking for volunteers who can help disabled people to get to the top of Scafell Pike. You don't have to be disabled to join in! Come for the fun!

You will not be asked to gather any sponsorship for this event.

No fee is paid to Good4you, but you will have to send us a deposit of £25 to secure a place. Half of the £25 will pay for two nights' accommodation in a tent at the Old Post Office Campsite,
and the other half will be returned to you. If you do not want to spend the weekend camping you can book a room at http://bowerhouseinn.co.uk/, a mile down the road. The only other
costs you will incur are transport to get there, and the food you bring with you. Good4you has four big tents for all to share.

The 2010 Scafell Pike Wheelchair Challenge

In August 2010 Good4you invited disabled people to get to the top of the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. They attended with their friends and supporters. They did not take the easy route, but the hard route, via Mickledore. Life is not easy.

Several people with unseen disabilities took part, and one person with a wheelchair, Kenny Herriot. Kenny is an Olympic Wheelchair athlete. It is easy for anyone to see the difficulties that Kenny faces, and the ways in which he unites people in a team. By working together they got to the top. People with depression face problems of the same magnitude as Kenny, if not greater. Depression and bipolar disorder all too often turn out to be a fatal illness and a terminal disability. For people with unseen disabilities, life can be a bitter struggle and it is critically important to achieve something in life, no matter how large or how small. Here's a video from 2012 where we took around 50 people on the trip next to which is a video showing how we took Keith up the mountain.

What we achieved

The 2010 Scafell Pike Wheelchair Challenge helped several disabled people to get to the top of the greatest height in England. They have earned the right to aim for the top in any other field. We invite you and your friends to join us in getting to the top of the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. We go in the summer every year, and we invite YOU to come and join us - so please phone us if you want to join us next time. - 020 8123 4224.

“If you got to the top once, then you can do it again - in any other field.”
